Q&A With Capt. Nicholas Boyd

Describe your fly fishing style.
I go hard, but am a patient guide who understands the challenges and enjoys the process of fishing with anglers of all abilities.

Why did you decide to become a guide?
I grew up in the Lowcountry fly fishing and watching WorldAngling videos. It was inevitable, and the best decision I have ever made.

What is your most memorable catch?
I was lucky enough to be able to acquire Jose Wejebe’s Hells Bay Neptune. The first fish I caught on that boat was a 60 pound cobia on a fly tied by my good friend. It was pouring rain and the fish was waking right towards me on the surface. The moment the fly hit the water the cobra charged at it and inhaled the fly before I could even strip it.

What is your most memorable client catch?
Not a client, but my friend Chandler Williams and I were in Key West fishing with Brandon Cyr. I offered to pole the boat and put Chandler on his first bonefish ever.

Do you enjoy fishing as much as you enjoy guiding?
I do, but keep such a busy schedule that I don’t get to go as much as I’d like to. I still get at it a bit though.

Who got you into fishing?
James Boyd, my father, has dragged me around on his boat for as long as I can remember.

What is your favorite fish in the world to fish for?
Redfish. Hands down. No contest.

What is your dream fishing location?
Whitewater Bay, FL. I love getting lost in the Everglades.

Music or no music on the boat?
There are times when music is ok, and times when it is not.

What is your opinion of bananas?
Bananas are delicious. They are welcome on my boat.

What can everyone do to help the environment of the SC Lowcountry?
Practicing catch and release is simple way for everyone to easily contribute to the health of the fishery.
